Oxford Trip - 26 November 2024

Back
4 December 2024

On Tuesday, 27 Year 12 students headed off by coach to Merton College to find out more about studying at Oxford, how to apply, what college life is like as well as having a chance to explore the city in small groups. At Merton College, the Schools Liaison and Access Officer, Jenny Shaw, gave a presentation on what studying at Oxford entailed and details about the applications process. The students then had the chance to ask questions of four current students about their experiences of studying at Oxford which was very helpful. This was followed by a tour of Merton College which has the oldest continuously used library in the world as well as being the college where J.R.R.Tolkien taught. It looked beautiful in the November sunshine! This was followed by a very tasty lunch in hall where we all sat at high table.

After lunch, the students attended two mini lectures from current tutors at the college – one in medieval romance literature and one in biochemistry on the molecular structures of cells. These provided a flavour of the standard of lectures at Oxford.

After this, students had 2 hours to explore Oxford city centre before heading back on the coach.

This was a great opportunity to find out more about studying at Oxford and what steps students can take now to prepare for an application in the future. We are very grateful to Mr Paisley for accompanying the students on the trip as well as to the teachers who covered our lessons and our admin staff for their support in preparing for the trip.
